Miss Universe is an annual international beauty pageant that is run by the Miss Universe Organization. Along with its rival contests, Miss World and Miss Earth, this pageant is one of the most important and publicized beauty pageants in the world. It is held in more than 190 countries worldwide and seen by more than half a billion people annually. The pageant was founded in 1952 by the California-based clothing company Pacific Knitting Mills, and the Miss Universe Organization and the brand is currently owned, along with Miss USA and Miss Teen USA, by WME/IMG. Miss Universe Organization licenses local organizations that wish to select the Miss Universe contestant for their country, and approves the selection method for national delegates. The current Miss Universe logo – “the woman with stars” – was created in 1998

In 2015, after businessman Donald Trump, then co-owner of the pageant, made statements about illegal immigrants from Mexico in his U.S. presidential campaign kickoff speech, NBC decided to end its business relationship with him and stated that it would no longer air the Miss Universe or Miss USA pageants on its networks. In September 2015, Trump bought NBC’s share of the Miss Universe Organization, becoming its sole owner for three days, then sold the entire company to the WME/IMG talent agency.

The current Miss Universe is Iris Mittenaere of France who was crowned on 30 January 2017 in ManilaPhilippines.

History

The title “Miss Universe” was first used by the International Pageant of Pulchritude in 1926. This contest was held annually until 1935, when the Great Depression and other events preceding World War II led to its demise.

The current Miss Universe pageant was founded in 1952 by Pacific Knitting Mills, a California-based clothing company and manufacturer of Catalina Swimwear. The company was the sponsor of the Miss America pageant until 1951, when the winner, Yolande Betbeze, refused to pose for publicity pictures wearing one of their swimsuits. So in 1952 Pacific Knitting Mills organised the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants, co-sponsoring them for decades to follow.

The first Miss Universe Pageant was held in Long Beach, California in 1952. It was won by Armi Kuusela from Finland, who gave up her title, though not officially, to get married, shortly before her year was completed. Until 1958, the Miss Universe title, like that of Miss America, was dated by the year following the contest, so at the time Ms. Kuusela’s title was Miss Universe 1953.

Since its founding by Pacific Mills, the pageant has been organized and conducted by the Miss Universe Organization. Eventually Pacific Mills and its subsidiaries were acquired by the Kayser-Roth Corporation, which was in turn acquired by Gulf and Western Industries.

The pageant was first televised in 1955. CBS began broadcasting the combined Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants in 1960, and as separate contests in 1965. John Charles Daly hosted the pageant from 1955 to 1966, Bob Barker from 1967 to 1987, Alan Thicke in 1988, John Forsythe in 1989, Dick Clark from 1990 to 1993, and Bob Goen from 1994 to 1996.

Donald Trump bought the operating company, Miss Universe, Inc., in 1996 from ITT Corp. Trump struck a broadcasting arrangement with CBS for a few years. In 1998, Miss Universe, Inc. changed its name to Miss Universe Organization, and moved its headquarters from Los Angeles to New York City. In 2002 Trump entered into a joint venture with NBC, which in 2003 outbid the other networks for the TV rights. From 2003 to 2014, the pageant was broadcast in the US on NBC.

NBC and Univision dropped the pageant in September 2015 when NBC cancelled all business relationships with the Miss Universe Organization and with Trump in response to his political comments in June 2015 about illegal immigration during his campaign for the presidency of the United States. As part of the legal settlement, in September 2015, Trump bought out NBC’s 50% stake in the company making him the company’s sole owner. Three days later he sold the whole company to WME/IMG. Following the change of ownership, in October 2015, Fox and Azteca became the official broadcaster of the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants. The current president of the Miss Universe Organization is Paula Shugart.

Crown

Since 2014, Paulina VegaPia Wurtzbach, and Iris Mittenaere were decorated with a crown estimated to be worth US$300,000, produced in the workshop of Czech company DIC – Diamonds International Corporation. The whole production process, from the first sketches to the production itself, took approximately four months. The shape of the crown is reminiscent of Manhattan skyline. Its production required the work of 10 people and the crown is made up of 311 pcs of diamonds, 5 pieces of blue topaz, 198 pieces of blue sapphire, 33 pieces of crystal and 220 grams of gold. Total weight of the crown is 411 g.

Himachal Showcase Tableau on Republic Day January 26, 2017 in Grand Parade New Delhi

Himachal Showcase Tableau on Republic Day January 26, 2017 in Grand Parade New Delhi
A tableau from Himachal Pradesh will be part of the 68th Republic Day after a gap of three years. This time, the tableau will present the state’s traditional art form – the Chamba Rumal
Officials claim Chamba Rumal is the finest specimen of Pahari art form which flourished in Chamba Town of Himachal Pradesh during the 18th century. A hand woven satin cloth is embroidered with untwisted silken thread in double stitch that appears same on both sides known as ‘Dorukha’.
It is a common item of gifts during marriages or celebrations with detailed patterns in bright and pleasing colour schemes. The most common themes inspired by Pahari Miniature Paintings on them are Krishna’s Raasleela, Chaupad, Shikaar and Mahabharata etc. The product has been registered for protection under Intellectual Property Rights Agreements in 2007, officials added.
The tableau has a statue of a lady doing embroidery on Chamba Rumal in the front. The middle section shows Raasleela – a dance performance of Radha and Lord Krishna alongwith gopis. The women of Chamba engaged in traditional embroidery work on Chamba Rumal are also shown in this section. The big Millennium Gate of Chamba town adorns at the rear portion of the tableau.
It was way back in 2013 when the tableau from the state was showcased on Republic Day depicting the life of people in tribal Kinnaur district. In 2007, the tableau depicted the monasteries and monks of Lahaul and Spiti. In 1998, the tableau showcased Kullu Dusshera celebrations and the chariot of Lord Raghunatha while in 1993, tableau showing a tourist enjoying snowfall had won an award, sources said.

Mile Sur Mera Tumhara

Republic Day 2017 Live Web Cast

Mele sur mera tumhara &
Phir Mile Sur Mera Tumhara
Twenty years after the original debut, the song was re-recorded with an updated cast for telecast on January 26, 2010 by Zoom TV. The lyrics were the same but the order of the appearance of languages changed. This version titled Phir Mile Sur Mera Tumhara features Indian musicians, singers, sportspersons and film personalities from the current generation. The current version (little over 16 minutes) runs longer than the older version (little over 5 minutes) and has been directed by Kailash Surendranath who had directed the original version of Mile Sur Mera Tumhara as well. The new version also retains music composer/arranger Louis Banks who had co-composed/arranged the original Mile Sur Mera Tumhara as well.
Some of the people featured in this version are (in no particular order):
Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, A R Rahman, Sonu Nigam, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Prasenjit Chatterjee, Baichung Bhutia, Shahrukh Khan, Mahesh Babu, Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Shaan, Bhupen Hazarika, Kavita Krishnamoorthy, Dr. L. Subramaniam, Anoushka Shankar, Mammootty, Shivkumar Sharma, Rahul Sharma (musician), Gurdas Mann, Juhi Chawla, Zakir Hussain (musician), Thetakudi Harihara Vinayakram, Vikram, Surya, Abhinav Bindra, Sudarshan Patnaik, Shilpa Shetty, Vijender Singh, Sushil Kumar, Karan Johar, K. J. Yesudas, Shiamak Davar, Shobana Chandrakumar, Shreya Ghosal, Rohit Bal, Priyanka Chopra, Louis Banks, Rituparna Sen Gupta, Amjad Ali Khan, Amaan Ali Khan, Ayaan Ali Khan and Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy
The immediate reaction of most Indians to the video was one of disappointment. Unlike its predecessor, the new version seemed to showcase the Hindi film industry more than national integration. Among many notable omissions were Sachin Tendulkar, APJ Abdul Kalam, Ratan Tata. It dropped some languages and had no representatives from several important Indian communities such as Jains and Buddhists. The musical arrangement has come under criticism from viewers too.[3]
The redeeming features of this version are its inclusion of a verse rendered in sign language and showcasing the Indian Armed Forces in the end.
Mile sur mera tumharaa, Thoo sur bane hamaraa…. sur kee nadhiyaan

Har disha se behkee saagar mein milee. Baadalon ka roop leiker

About
“Ek sur” (One Tune) (languages of India), or “Mile Sur Mera Tumhara” as it is better known, is an Indian song and accompanying video promoting national integration and unity in diversity.

The concept for Mile Sur was developed in 1988 by Lok Seva Sanchar Parishad and promoted by Doordarshan (then India’s sole TV broadcaster) and India’s Ministry of Information. The song was composed by Ashok Patki, co-composed & arranged by Louis Banks, with lyrics by Piyush Pandey (then an Account Manager and presently the Executive Chairman and Creative Head of Ogilvy and Mather, India). The project was conceived and directed by Suresh Mullick (then all India Creative Director, Ogilvy & Mather) and recorded by people from all walks of life, including a supergroup of Indian celebrities—musicians, sports persons, movie stars, etc.

The national integration video was intended to instill a sense of pride and promote unity amongst Indians, highlighting India’s different linguistic communities and societies—India’s unity in diversity, so to speak. Mile Sur was telecast for the first time on Independence Day 1988, after the telecast of the Prime Minister’s speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort.

It quickly captivated India, gaining and maintaining near-anthem status ever since.

Further criticism arose over the omission of notable personalities such as, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Sachin Tendulkar and Vishwanathan Anand.

Following independence from Britain in 1947, Himachal Pradesh was created as a province on 15 April 1948. This event is celebrated with a public holiday of its own – Himachal Day.
In 1950 it became a sub state under the Indian constitution then becoming a union territory in 1956.
On 18 December 1970 the State of Himachal Pradesh Act was passed by Parliament and the new state came into being on 25 January 1971 making it the 18th state of India. Y.S. Parmar became the state’s first chief minister.
Between its creation in 1948 and statehood in 1971, Himachal Pradesh also changed its boundaries several times, incorporating smaller districts in the region.
After The independence Himachal Pradesh as political entity came into existence on 15th April, 1948. 26 January 1950 with the implementation of the Constitution of India Himachal as a part C state become union territory under Chief commissioner. It was constituted by integrating the princely States of Chamba, Mandi, Suket, Sirmaur and 26 smaller states known as the Punjab Hill States. Subsequently, in 1954 Bilaspur, which was then a part “C” State, was also merged with Himachal Pradesh. In 1960 District Kinnaur was carved out of District Mahsu which was earlier constituted by merging 27 hill states.
After the re-organization of Punjab in 1966, Shimla, Kangra, Kullu, Lahaul & Spiti Districts, Una Tehsil of Hoshiarpur District and Nalagarh Tehsil of Ambala District were also merged with the Union Territory of Himachal Pradesh. On 18 December 1970 the State of Himachal Pradesh Act was passed by Parliament and the new state came into being on 25 January 1971. Thus Himachal emerged as the eighteenth state of the Indian Union. In 1972 Districts of Kangra and Mahasu were reorganized. District Kangra was trifurcated ,Una and Hamirpur Tehsils were made into separate Districts. Some areas of Mahasu District were merged with Shimla District while the others formed the new District of Solan.
After India became free in 1947, there was a demand in some quarters for the merger of Hill States with the east Punjab but it met with vehement opposition from the rulers and people. In what is Himachal Pradesh today, the Praja Mandal workers and the rulers had different opinions about the future of these hilly states. After a brief spell of hectic negotiation, the rulers and the Praja Mandal workers decided to inform Government of India to form a union of these small hill states with the name of Himachal Pradesh. In view of these events, the Central Government decided to integrate all these principalities into a single unit to be administered by Govt. of India through a Chief Commissioner.
As a result, Himachal Pradesh came into being as a part ‘C’ State of the Indian Union on 15th April, 1948 by integration/merger together of 31 big and small hill states. These states were Baghat, Bhajji, Baghal, Bija, Balsen, Bushehar, Chamba, Darkoti, Deloth-Dhadi, Dhami, Ghund, Jubbal, Khaneti, Kyarkoti, Kumarsain, Kunihar, Kuthar, Mandi, Madhan, Mahlog, Mangal, Kot(Ratesh), Keonthal, Rawinigarh, Sangri, Sirmaur, Suket, Tharoch & Theog. All these areas at that time constituted four districts viz. Chamba, Mahasu, Mandi and Sirmaur with an area of 27,169 square kilometres. In 1954, the neighbouring State of Bilaspur was integrated with Himachal Pradesh, thereby adding one more district with an area of 1167 square kilometres.
Himachal Pradesh continued as a part ‘C’ State of the Indian Union till 1956 when the states’ Reorganisation Commission submitted its recommendations to abolish the categorisation of states as part A, B, C, etc. and recommended the merger of all part `C’ states either with the adjoining states of higher status or to maintain these independently as union territories till a further decision was taken. Himachal Pradesh continued to exist as a Union Territory till the conferment of statehood on 25th January 1971

HAPPY HIMACHAL DAY 15th April . Himachal Pradesh state came into being as a centrally administered territory on 15 April 1948 from the integration of thirty ( 30 ) erstwhile princely states

In 1960, the border Chini tehsil of Mahasu district was carved out as a separate administrative unit and district Kinnaur was formed raising the total number of districts to six. On Ist November, 1966, the then Punjab State was reorganised with the formation of Haryana as a separate state and merger of the then Kullu, Kangra, Shimla and some hilly areas of Hoshiarpur district and Dalhousie of Gurdaspur district into Himachal Pradesh constituting the four new districts viz. Kullu, Lahaul & Spiti, Kangra and Shimla in Himachal Pradesh and merging Dalhousie into Chamba district. With this addition, Himachal Pradesh comprised of ten districts, an area of 55,673 sq. Kilometres and a population of 28.12 lakh according to 1961 census. 6,864,602 i.e. 68 Lakh in 2011 census and now we’ll around 70 Lakh in total.
On 1st September 1972, two more districts viz. Hamirpur and Una were created by trifurcation of Kangra district and the Mahasu and Solan districts were reorganised as Shimla and Solan districts. In this re-organisation, Shimla town was re-organised with the erstwhile Mahasu district to form Shimla district.
It was on January 25, 1971, when then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had provided statehood to the state. Earlier, Himachal Pradesh was a Union territory of India.

Himachal Pradesh today celebrating its 47th statehood day.

The province comprised the hill districts around Shimla and southern hill areas of the former Punjab region. Himachal became a part C state on 26 January 1950 with the implementation of the Constitution of India. Himachal Pradesh became a Union Territory on 1 November 1956. On 18 December 1970 the State of Himachal Pradesh Act was passed by Parliament and the new state came into being on 25 January 1971. Thus Himachal emerged as the eighteenth state of the Indian Union.
Himachal Pradesh is famous for its natural beauty, hill stations, and temples.[8] Himachal Pradesh has been ranked fifteenth in the list of the highest per capita incomes of Indian states and union territories for year 2013-14.[9] Many perennial rivers flow in the state, and numerous hydroelectric projects set up. Himachal produces surplus hydroelectricity and sells it to other states such as Delhi, Punjab, and Rajasthan.[10] Hydroelectric power projects, tourism, and agriculture form important parts of the state’s economy.[10]
The state has several valleys,[11]and more than 90% of the population living in rural areas.[12]Practically all houses have a toilet and 100% hygiene has been achieved in the state.[13] The villages have good connectivity with roads, public health centres, and now with high-speed broadband.
Shimla district has maximum urban population of 25%. It has incorporated environmental protection and tourism development has been aided with a government ban on the use of polyethylene bags, reducing litter, and tobacco products, to aid people’s health. According to a 2005 Transparency International survey, Himachal Pradesh was ranked the second-least corrupt state in the country, after Kerala
The crux is that the foundation of Himachal was laid on April 15, 1948 which is celebrated as Himachal Day but it was on Jan 25, 1971 when Himachal was carved out as 18th state of India and we celebrate it as statehood day.
